Who Can Join?

Freemasonry in England and Wales is open to any man over the age of 18 who expresses a belief in a Supreme Being. This doesn’t mean you have to be a Christian, we are open to men of all faiths, in fact anyone who can fulfil that requirement.

We do point out that during our ceremonies candidates are required to take an oath (we call it an obligation) on the Holy Book of their own faith.

Also, like any other club you have to be able to afford the fees and subscriptions without affecting your domestic duties. Details of current costs can be found on our ‘What Does it Cost?’ page.

We are often asked if women can join. In England and Wales we are a purely male organisation, but there are parallel female masonic organisations whose principles and ceremonies are almost identical to ours. We will happily put you in contact with them. There have been suggestions that we combine our organisations, but both are happy to keep them separate.
